If you’re like me, you love easy ways to save or make money. Sticking to a budget can be challenging at times when you’ve got a family to take care of, but there are some simple ways to save money or make a little extra without requiring major changes to your life or daily routines.
Over the past year or so I’ve come across a number of amazing mobile apps that make frugality and savings simple. In this article I’ll share 15 apps that I think you will love!
All of these apps are free, and several of them will even pay you a bonus just for signing up or installing the app. From the apps on this list you can earn $32 in cash sign up bonuses, $20 in Amazon gift cards, and $10 in savings – and that’s just the beginning!
The Best Mobile Apps for Saving and Making Money
Ebates has a cash back app that you can use to save money on purchases that you would be making anyway. You can use the mobile app, or just use Ebates on your desktop or laptop (you can also use it for some in-store purchases).
If you’re using a desktop or laptop you can install the free Ebates browser extension. The browser extension will notify you whenever you are browsing a site that offers cash back through Ebates, and all you need to do is click the “activate” button. At that point you can continue with your shopping, Ebates will track what you buy, and you’ll earn cash back from your purchase.
Another great way Ebates saves you money is by finding coupon codes for you. When you’re checking out Ebates will alert you if it knows about a coupon code that can save you some additional money.
One of the best things about Ebates is that you earn cash, not credits or gift cards. Ebates will send you a check for whatever you’ve earned.
With thousands of stores and websites like Amazon, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Groupon, Overstock, Best Buy, and many others in their program, earning cash back with Ebates is easy.
Ibotta is a different type of cash back app that can also save you a lot of money on everyday purchases. You can view different cash back offers and choose the ones that you want. You can browse by store, or the category of the product. After you make the purchase you scan the receipt with your phone, and the money will be added to your Ibotta account. You can cash out to PayPal, or choose gift cards from many different stores and restaurants.
You can use Ibotta for buying groceries, clothes, electronics, for booking travel, and other categories. You can also use Ibotta similarly to Ebates, for cash back with online purchases. Sometimes you’ll get special offers, like a $5 reward for any purchase on a mobile phone.
Trim is a free app that helps you to save money on your monthly bills. It will look for subscriptions that you don’t use, and ask you if you want to cancel them. Trim will also negotiate your cable or internet bill and find ways for you to save on car insurance.
Trim is totally free to try. If they are able to negotiate savings on your behalf, they’ll get 33% of the savings. It’s worth trying for sure.
Paribus finds refunds that are owed to you. You’ll link it to the email address that you use for online purchases. Paribus will monitor the receipt emails that come from stores/websites with price match guarantees, and it will try to find a lower price. And then they make the process as easy as possible for you to get the refund.
Paribus also will monitor your Amazon purchases to make sure that your items arrive on time. Did you know that Amazon will often give you a gift card or a free month of Prime if your shipment arrives late? Paribus will help you to get these perks that you would probably miss out on without the app’s help.
Want a really easy way to save money on things you would be buying anyway? At Raise you can buy gift cards to hundreds of different stores at prices below face value. The amount that you’ll save will depend on the store or restaurant, but in many cases you can save 10% or more. Raise offers a 1-year money-back guarantee, so you don’t need to worry about getting ripped off. Just use Raise.com or download their app and use it on your mobile phone.
If you use this link you can get $10 off your first purchase of $100 or more. And once you make your first purchase you’ll be on their email list and they frequently send out great offers that add even more to the savings.
There are gift cards available for just about any store or restaurant you can think of. There are even some available for gas stations and grocery stores (the discounts tend to be smaller on those).
You can even earn a little extra cash back by purchasing through Ebates before making a purchase at Raise.
Personal Capital is a free personal finance app that has a lot of powerful features. You can use the website or mobile app, but either one will help you to get a better grasp on your finances. You can link it to all of your bank accounts and investments, and view everything in one convenient dashboard.
It gives you all kinds of helpful reports on the performance of your investments. You can see a breakdown of the fees you’re paying on your investments. It even has a helpful retirement planner. For a free app there is an amazing amount of data available. Right now, if you sign up through this link you’ll get a $20 Amazon gift card after you link your first account.
Swagbucks allows you to earn credits (they call them Swagbucks) for doing a lot of different things. You can use the website or the mobile app to earn Swagbucks for things like taking brief surveys, watching videos, and playing games. You can also earn cash back for making online purchases at many different websites. You can cash in your Swagbucks for payment by PayPal, or gift cards from a huge selection of retailers.
Swagbucks is a really great, and easy, way to earn some extra money. Right now they are offering a $10 bonus if you sign up through this link (in order to get the bonus you’ll need to make a purchase of at least $25 within 30 days of registering, but with so many partner stores and websites that is really easy).
MyPoints is really similar to Swagbucks. You earn points for things like taking surveys, playing games, watching videos, and even for printing coupons. You can also earn points for shopping at their thousands of partner websites.
Just like Swagbucks, MyPoints is a pretty easy way to make a little extra money if you have some spare time.
ShopKick is a unique app. You can earn “kicks” for simply walking into certain retail stores. You can also earn kicks for using your phone to scan specific items in the store. And you’ll get even more kicks for making purchases. After you’ve earned some kicks you can redeem them for gift cards.
Right now you can get a bonus of 250 kicks if you sign up through this link (in order to get the bonus you’ll need to get your first walk-in or scan within 7 days).
Gas Buddy is an app with the purpose of saving you money on gas. The app will show you which gas stations have the lowest price in your area, so you know where to fill up and so you can avoid overpaying.
They also have a program called Pay with Gas Buddy. When you sign up for this free program you’ll get a card that’s basically a debit card linked to your checking account. You’ll use that card to pay for gas and earn cash back. You can either save at the pump or join the Shop Your Way program to earn credits that you can use on a huge selection of different products. If you choose to save at the pump you’ll get $0.05 cash back per gallon, and if you choose Shop Your Way you’ll get $0.15 per gallon in rewards. Those numbers double to $0.10 per gallon and $0.30 per gallon for your first 60 days in the program.
Trunow is another app to help you save on gas. Like Gas Buddy, you can use it to find the lowest prices around you. But Trunow also has a cash back feature. You can take a photo of any gas receipt and upload it for 1% – 2% cash back. If the gas station is a part of their program you’ll get 2%. If the gas station is not a part of their program you’ll get 1%. Either way, you can use Trunow to double stack on rewards points. You can get cash back by paying either with a cash back credit card or Gas Buddy, and then get additional cash back with Trunow.
12. Checkout 51
Checkout 51 is a cash back app specifically for grocery stores. It’s similar to Ibotta. You’ll browse through the offers by store or category, mark the ones that you want, and then take a photo of your receipt to get the cash back. Offers change weekly, and there’s always plenty to choose from. When your account reaches $20 you can cash out and get a check.
Coupons.com is a great place to find a huge variety of coupons that you can print at home. Did you know they also have a mobile app? With the Coupons.com app you can use coupons without even needing to print them!
Flipp is a website and app that makes it easy for you to browse through the sales flyers from a huge selection of stores. Never miss out on a sale just because you don’t have a newspaper!
15. Receipt Hog
Receipt Hog is a free cash back app. You can earn “coins” by scanning your receipts. Unlike Ibotta and Checkout 51, you don’t need to claim offers, you simply scan your receipt after a purchase.
Occasionally you’ll also have the opportunity to earn coins by taking brief surveys that are prompted by specific items that you purchased. You can also earn credits to play a slot machine to win additional coins. When you’ve accumulated enough coins you can cash them in for gift cards or payment by PayPal.
While the potential money that you can make with Receipt Hog is lower than what you might be able to make with other apps like Ebates or Ibotta, Receipt Hog is nice and easy because you can use just about any receipt (retail, grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, etc).
